Calendar App in iOS 5

The Calendar app in iOS5 is shipped with some new and useful tricks that is going to make your schedule making a little more touchy-feely.

The Long-Press Gesture

Up until iOS4, the only way to add a Calendar event is to tap the "+" button on the top right corner in the app.

New in iOS5, when in Day view, you can long-press anywhere with open slots, and a new event will appear on the screen right beneath your finger. Nifty. The new event will be hovering on the screen, following your finger wherever it goes until you let go of the touch, allowing you to place it on the time slot you desire.

Creating a new event by long-pressing the screen.

If you long-press an existing event, that event will also appear to be hovering, making it easy to move an event by touch.

Changing Event Duration

After lifting your finger from the long-press gesture, you will see two little circles attached to the event, one on top, and another below. These circles are the handles for you to change the duration of an event: dragging the top circle changes the start time, and the bottom circle the end time.

Changing duration by touching.

Week view in iPhone

Thanks to a larger-size screen, iPad's Calendar App has always have a Week view. In iOS5, iPhone gains the similar capability, finally.

Week View on iPad.
If you hold your iPhone in the landscape position, you will see a brand new view with multiple days going across, and the hours of each day going downwards. You can pan the view sideway or vertically by touching, no surprise there. Other than presenting your schedule in a whole new perspective, the aforementioned tricks still apply here, meaning you can move a event to a different day just by long-pressing and sliding your finger. This is by far my most favorite new trick on the iOS5 Calendar App.

To Anonymous: care to share more detail?
I updated an iPhone4 and iPad2 to using iOS 5, not getting any problem with the tricks in this post. Are you using iOS 5?

Anonymous said...

Yes. I updated my iphone 4 to ios 5.
All of my previous events in my calender are there, but when I try to add a new one by pressing and holding in an empty area in the "Day" view, nothing happens.

and another issue i noticed is after updating, all my songs are in my iphone but when i try to actually click play on any song, it shows the album art but it's stuck at 0:00.

How exactly are you able to view event attachments in calendars. Overall the new features are great. I just noticed this often qouted feature seems to be missing

MacNify said...

Yeah MarcusV, event attachment would be a nice feature to have.

What you experience in the calendar is strange. Let's see if other readers experience the same and can share what they find out as a solution. As for the music, I experienced something similar. Turns out iTunes takes a few cycles to sync up your contents (app, photos, music...) after upgrading. I learned this the hard way as my iPhone was packed full with content during the upgrade process, which is why I wrote this post at http://macnify.blogspot.com/2011/10/upgrade-to-ios-5-with-cautions.html suggesting a preemptive workaround. I hope that's useful.

I also have a problem entering an event to calendar. I do not even have the [plus] sign in the upper right hand corner. I have not linked to an iCloud account. Could this be the problem?

I had a problem with iOS 5 adding events to calendar, but when I enabled and merged calendar in iCloud, everything began to work.

There is no "+" button in landscape mode, if that's what you are talking about.

If the "+" button isn't there in portrait mode, that would be a nasty bug.

I also have an iphone3GS that I updated with ios5. My calendar no longer has a + button at the top right, not matter what view I'm in: list, day or month. I use my calendar all the time! What do I do? Are we supposed to use the calendar in the Reminder app now? All my information is already in the regular Calendar app. And the long-hold feature doesn't work on my phone either.

No problems with my music though, just tested it.

I had the same problem last night, and figured out that if you iCloud settings and turn "on" Calendars, Contacts, etc... it will enable you to add new entries! :)

I hope this helps.

I had the same problem with my calendar. go to settings - icloud - calendars - on
and everything works again - you can create events!

The consensus so far seems to agree that enabling calendar on iCloud settings solve the problem of non-responsive Calendar app. Thanks for the great feedbacks, guys!

i solve the problem by re-syncing the phone

How i can sync my calendars with my wife? We both have iphone 4 ios 5. Can u teach me how, please?

enabling the contact function on the icloud settings will solve the problem. I had the same issue with not being able to add events but once i enabled this function, the long-press worked and i was able to add an events etc.

Please help! I have updated to iOS 5 and now my calendar entries are all doubled?

I update to the latest OS just today and lost the ability to add events to my calendar..... went back into the iCloud in settings and activated "contacts" and "calendar".... now the "+Event" option is viable.... why would the genius folks at Apple default it in activated mode? must spent an hour working on this.... any more undocumented features out there that anyone knows of?

I have also been experiencing the same problem with the calander. I just checked the calander button in iCloud & it does now allow me to use the long hold to enter a new appt.
I don't actually want to sync the calander with iCloud permanently as the iCloud is set up under my hubby's account with all his work crap in the calander. We only did it this way so that whatever photos I take or music I purchase can be uploaded to his ipad automatically...
Is there anyway to enable the calander to work without having it linked to iCloud?

Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I have tried resync my phone and turn my calender off under iCloud. I have now lost all of my previous appointments in my calender, and when I try to enter new ones, they disappear as fast as I press done.
